(194*) Audio training (04) – pronouns in accusative /ho, něho, ji, ni/

If you haven’t been told this information yet, this might be not a very good news for you: Pronouns have cases, too. For example: ona (she), ní, ji, jí, on (he), něho, ho, jeho, němu, mu, atd. But dont worry, I will help you today with a couple of pronouns. But firstly a question – what is a pronoun? Its a short word that replaces the noun. And since it is a short word, it is coming on the second position in Czech sentence. And because it replaces the noun, thats the reason why we call it pro-noun or zájmeno. It comes za jméno (instead of the noun).

When replacing the noun, one important thing: you need to know its gender. Because we use masculin and feminine. So if you want to sound as a Czech person, think of the gender. Example is better that the theory, right. In English “Do you like that pullover or jumper? Yes, I do like it.” In Czech: Yes, I like him. Or: “Can you hear that song? Yeah, I can hear her.” I know pullover and song are things but Czech things are alive and have genders 🙂 And you migh ask – but what about the neuter? Good news, neuter acts like masculine. Jupí, less words to learn! Example: “Will you buy this car? Koupíš si tohle auto?” “I will but him. Koupím si ho.”

Another thing. We have two groups of pronouns. Those that we use without a preposition. It means that there is no “about, under, below, for, to,…”. You say directly verb and the noun. Ex: I see him. Vidím ho. I see her. Vidím ji. And then, the form will be different when used with the preposition. I talk about him, give it to me, I think of him, I think of her… Myslím na něj. Myslím na ni. So either, just accept that the form is like that in those senteces. Or keep in mind that you need to notice whether there is a preposition or isnt.

Now, lets work on accusative cases. So, the direct object case. The most used one.  In todays episode I will use as much as information possible alltogether (in my sentences I will use pronouns, adjective, noun – so not only Vidíš psa? But Vidíš toho krásného černého psa?)

Firstly, I will read for you the whole story. And then, I will have some questions with mixed genders for you + I will give you some time to answer my questions. Funny game!

And I suggest you to listen to the first part while reading the transcript on slowczech.com because you can see the different colors for different genders. So, listen and read. And once you are sure to understand, then, listen again without reading a couple of times.Just to get it to your ear. Its easier than trying to learn by heart and its proven that we learn way better when hearing and not when only reading.

One last thing before we start, some vocabulary you might need:

blázniví lidé = crazy people, vidíš ty bláznivé lidi, co cvičí jógu?
veselá opice = happy monkey (btw, Mám opici means I have hangover)
brečící dítě = crying baby
cinkající tramvaje = ringing trams
staráš se o něj/ o ni = do you take care of him/her
to malé kotě = the little kitten

Tak, get ready, jdeme na to.

business, mother, polyglote

I am slowczech founder and from my experience I know two things: beginners can understand words with time. And enjoyable input is vital for natural language acquisition. Many give up Czech due to old methods, irrelevant vocabulary or overwhelming grammar. Let’s change that and make learning Czech exciting and effective.
